This certificate prepares students for entry level careers in Packaging Design and commercial printing. This includes instruction in all phases of project creation and production, using the latest equipment and software available. Classes are structured to give strong academic and hands-on experience into packaging design, print production, and finishing.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
- Evaluate packaging design types, methods, and applications in the commercial printing industry.
- Explore career and entrepreneurial opportunities available in packaging design and printing industries.
- Understand essential role packaging design has in brand identity development.
- Demonstrate the proper use of branding graphics appropriate for marketing and advertising campaigns.
- Create professional quality, print ready dielines using industry specific software for commercial printing production.
Applied Digital Media and Printing program required courses are offered every semester to assist student completion rates. The majority of the scheduled courses satisfy degree requirements for multiple certificates. This provides ADM students with a variety of available pathways to completion. The target completion rate for the Basic Graphic Communications Certificate is 12 students annually.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The Packaging Design and Printing certificate, offered by the Applied Digital Media and Printing program, provides prospective learners from a diverse community with hands-on training in the fields of graphic communication and print production. Successful completion of this career-technical program will equip students with foundational skills and practical knowledge in all phases of project creation, production and finishing. Possible career outcomes for this program include: production worker, production artist, production assistant, press operator, pre-press technician or graphic artist. Relevancy of this program is maintained via annual input from an advisory committee and industry feedback.

ADM1 Introduction to Applied Digital Media, ADM2B Printing Systems and Color Management, ADM-77A Adobe Illustrator for Graphic Art, ADM-77B Adobe Illustrator for Graphic Art, Advanced, ADM83 Packaging Design, and ADM85A Commercial Printing are the six courses that make up this program.
Together these classes form a marketable foundation for students who want to learn the complete process of packaging design and package printing production.
