Program Requirements Narrative

This program positions Pasadena City College to be a leader in developing a skilled workforce to ensure the health and longevity of Southern California's urban forests.  This program will be unique to the region. By increasing the number of certified arborists, Southern California communities can ensure the health and longevity of their urban forests, reaping the environmental, economic, and social benefits these vital ecosystems provide:

  • Enhanced Tree Health and Lifespan: Arborists possess the expertise to diagnose and treat tree diseases, address pest infestations, and implement proper pruning techniques. This leads to healthier trees with longer lifespans, beautifying neighborhoods and contributing to property values.
  • Improved Air and Water Quality: Healthy trees absorb pollutants and release oxygen, filtering the air we breathe. They also help manage stormwater runoff, reducing erosion and improving water quality in local streams and rivers.
  • Increased Energy Efficiency: Trees provide shade for buildings and streets, lowering cooling costs during hot summers. This translates to reduced energy consumption and a smaller carbon footprint for the community.
  • Boosted Property Values: Studies consistently show that homes with mature trees in the vicinity command higher prices. A thriving urban forest with well-maintained trees enhances the overall aesthetics and desirability of neighborhoods.
  • Promotes Sustainability and Climate Resilience: Urban forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, and help regulate local temperatures. A program that strengthens urban forestry practices fosters a more sustainable and climate-resilient community.

Citrus College offers a Wildland Resources and Forestry Certificate and AS Degree.  This program is focused on the care and management of forest lands and wildland areas.  The PCC program would have little if any anticipated overlap, as the focus of the PCC program would be entirely on the urban forest and would lead to students becoming arborist and urban forest managers.
