Electronic Digital Instrument - Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree
New Program
Commercial Music (100500)
02/08/25
The Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI) Associate of Science Degree announces the EDI as the primary instrument of technical study in this purely digital 21st-century program. Students will receive technical, musical, and practical training, including collaborative opportunities, and live recording experience on an Electronic Digital Instrument in innovative musical situations. This groundbreaking workforce CTE program trains students for work in the music industry by focusing exclusively on the intersection between Electronic Digital Instruments and Electronic Pop music styles.
To acquire the Associate of Science in Electronic Digital Instrument, students must complete the required major courses below with a grade of "C" or better along with one of the following: Rio Hondo College General Education and Proficiency requirements, California State University General Education Breadth (CSU GE), or Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC).
We expect 12-15 annual completers for this program.
Program Proposal Attributes
- A.S. Degree (S)
The Associate of Science Degree Focus in Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI) is designed as part of a 2+2 program that will build on either this associate’s degree or a degree from an accredited college or university. Under both scenarios, graduates will be admitted to the EDI Program as third-year juniors to complete the baccalaureate degree within two years. This degree program is a response to a number of barriers to entry to traditional commercial music BA programs. This program was designed and created to respond to a population of students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree and a career in music without a strong musical background or proficiency with a traditional musical instrument. There exists a requirement by CSU four-year baccalaureate programs to be proficient with a musical instrument and pass an audition prior to admission. The Rio Hondo College music program leadership and faculty believe that traditional musical instrument skills should not be necessary nor a barrier to a successful career in music.

New Program
The Music and Integrated Technology program is designed to prepare students with comprehensive music and technology skills needed to enter the professional workplace. This program will focus on building a strong “music core” foundation with courses of study in electronic music, songwriting and arranging, studio recording, sound design, music composition, live sound reinforcement, and music production. This program creates opportunities for students to compose, arrange, and produce music and artists in a variety of contemporary classical and popular musical styles.
The proposed Associate of Science degree in Electronic Digital Instrument builds on the existing Associate of Science Degree in Music and Integrated Technology. In addition to the proposed Bachelor’s degree, the program also offers ten certificates that will create pathways to success.
There are only two CSU programs that have distantly similar offerings. CSU Pomona has a Music Industry Studies program that focuses primarily on training students for administrative positions within the record industry. CSULA has a Commercial Music program that focuses on acoustic instruments to perform and create modern commercial music. They do not acknowledge that an EDI is a primary performance instrument.
