Catalog Description

The Baccalaureate in Restorative Justice and Rehabilitation program will support modern probation services and evidence-based rehabilitation. Existing programs in criminal justice, social work and law, have elements of restorative justice in embedded in the curriculum but fail to address the unique roles of those serving in probation services. Furthermore, criminal justice programs often lack the interdisciplinary breadth to provide students with skills and understanding on human development, community and family dynamics, mental health intervention, and cultural trauma-informed practice.

While law and social work programs lack the understanding of the unique role that probation services play in rehabilitation and the promotion of safe and equitable communities. This program provides educational underpinnings specifically designed to support modern probation services and evidence-based rehabilitation.  This program will provide dynamic interdisciplinary instruction involving human development, addiction studies, social and behavioral sciences, and a foundational understanding of the role of probation in promoting social justice and the empowerment of individual clients in their communities.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Restorative Justice and Rehabilitation program provides interdisciplinary instruction with a focus on the following elements:

    Administration of Justice, Criminology

Modern Probation Services and Evidence-based Rehabilitation

    Human development, and Psychology

Community, Family Dynamics, Cultural Diversity and Social Structure(s)

Case Management, Child Welfare & Social work

Mental Health Intervention, Addiction Treatment & Counseling

Understanding of Trauma-informed Practice and Care

    Research Applications in Social Sciences

Graduates of this program will be able to apply effective research practices to critically analyze and provide solutions in support of justice involved individuals and their communities.

Program Goal

The overall goal and objective of this program is to facilitate students earning a Bachelor's degree of Science in Restorative Justice and Rehabilitation. Specifically, based on industry input from a major regional partner, there is an unmet need with incumbent workers with Bachelors degrees in the field of Probationary services. In addition, exposing current and future workers in this field to the restorative justice approach will be a valued approach. A program like this will help address this workforce gap with individuals with the education and skills needed to work in probation, corrections, and rehabilitation services organizations.
