Surgical Technology

This program will train students to become Surgical Technologists working along side surgeons in the operating room. Students learn various surgical instrument trays, room/patient preparation, sterile technique, different surgical procedures, along with hands on clinical training in a medical facility. Accreditation through CAAHEP will be sought upon program approval by the state.

By year three of the program's offering, we project 30+ completers per year ongoing.

The Surgical Technology Program goal is to prepare students to become a contributing member of the healthcare team as a surgical technologist. The program will provide students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge in the field of surgical technology through progressive classes integrating written work, verbal skills, and lab based demonstrative performance. Upon graduation from the program, students will have the opportunity for employment in a medical facility.

Prior to a student enrolling in the Surgical Technology program they must first complete all required prerequisites, which includes Human Anatomy, Medical Terminology, Interpersonal Communication, Statistics, Microbiology, Human Physiology, and Academic Reading and Writing. Once the student is accepted into the program the sequence of classes will be as followed: (1st semester)Surgical Technology Fundamentals, Surgical Technology Fundamentals Lab, Principles of Composition, Introduction to statistics. (2nd semester) Surgical Procedures, Surgical Procedures Lab, Advanced Surgical Procedures, Advanced Surgical Procedures Lab, Skills Lab Remediation (if necessary). (3rd semester) Operating Room Clinical Practicum, Operating Room Clinical Practicum II, Skills Lab Remediation (if necessary). The program will seek accreditation through The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP).

This program will be in the School of Health and Wellness.  The School of Health and Wellness provides students with a comprehensive offering of health careers, exploring the connections between science, medicine, and society. Through practical learning in classrooms equipped to simulate real-world environments, students gain critical thinking and analytical skills and a deeper understanding health issues that strengthen their ability to help others. Students emerge with the training and ethical foundation required to provide competent and empathetic health services in a variety of settings, contributing significantly to the well-being of individuals and communities.
