The Electrical Maintenance Assistant Certificate of Achievement is designed for individuals seeking to advance their qualifications to be hired or promoted in electrical maintenance positions. The certificate is designed as the gateway for mid-range programs within the electrical technology and maintenance areas (see Electrotechnical Assistant or Electro-Mechanical Technical Assistant.) This certificate leads to more advanced training in automation, electrical technology, or maintenance. Advisory: Those interested in a specific technical profile (automation, electrical industry, or maintenance) may receive an orientation by consulting a counselor or a faculty member of the ELTEC department. However, any combination of elective classes will place the holder of the award in a technical assistance position within any industry. Seeking multiple qualifications (taking more than one elective) enhances the employability profile. All “ELTEC” coded classes included in the Electrical Maintenance Assistant Certificate of Achievement are approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards as officially recognized classes for the training of electrical trainees (ET) in the State of California.

Program Proposal Attributes

The Electrical Maintenance Assistant Certificate of Achievement is a necessary step to accomplish the
strategic goal of harmonizing Modesto Junior College’s Industrial Electronics and Electrical technology
programs with the vision and goals of the Guided Pathways project (as defined by the California
Community Colleges Chancellor Office.) In the pursuit of that strategic objective, MJC proposes the
rearrangement of these programs in a sequence of smaller, and therefore shorter, programs leading to
the Industrial Electronics, the Electrician, or the Electro-Mechanic certificates of achievement. In such
spirit, the specific goals of the Electrical Maintenance Assistant Certificate of Achievement program are
to deepen the skills obtained in the previous certificate, the Basic Electrical Training CoA, and to be a
previous stage in a sequence of stackable certificates leading to major awards (Industrial Electronics
CoA, Electrician CoA, or Electro-Mechanic CoA.)
The Electrical Maintenance Assistant CoA provides elective classes for training in topics related to
worksite necessities (for students employed in manufacturing or construction industries,) or for
exploring specializations in electrical installations, maintenance, or automation (for students not
employed in manufacturing or construction industries.) Students who accomplish this second level of
technical training will improve their employability value and will find an incentive to further their skills
following manageable milestones. This new certificate will be the second stage in a sequence of
stackable certificates leading to major awards (E.g.: Industrial Electronics CoA, Electrician CoA, or
Electro-Mechanic CoA.)
