Journalism Certificate of Achievement

The journalism degree is designed to facilitate the student's passage from Riverside City College to the California State University System with an Associate in Arts in Journalism for Transfer Degree (AA-T in Journalism). This degree will satisfy the lower division requirements for the eventual conferral of the Bachelor's Degree in Journalism at CSU. 

The major in journalism prepares students to employ ethical principles and practical skills in the presentation of their journalistic product to the public in print and online. Journalism majors excel in storytelling with text and in digital and video formats. It also prepares students to enter other careers such as public relations, communication and social media.

Through the program, students start their journalism careers while earning their certificate and/or degree. The goal is to train young journalists or sharpen the skills of those already in the field so that they may contribute to the local journalism profession in the Inland Empire, which has a shortage of news outlets.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

Demonstrate an applicable knowledge of the principles of ethical and socially responsible journalism.

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the equipment and software used by news media.

Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in news media and related occupations.
