Catalog Description

The proposed Mission College Behavioral Health Worker Certificate of Completion is a collaborative, innovative track of coursework that works towards training students to provide services to historically disenfranchised community members. Courses offered for the Certificate Behavioral Health Worker result in an option of a capstone course or fieldwork experience. Students will learn the basics of Behavioral Sciences with foundational courses in rehabilitation and recovery, promoting independent lifestyles, and how to create cooperative relationships within the community. Program Learning Outcomes: Develop specific culturally competent outreach and engagement strategies for special populations. Describe the capacity of an individual to improve and grow, given the opportunity and resources available.

Public health policy calls for culturally appropriate mental health services and education. Mental health education is a vital tool in the prevention of diseases and the mitigating efforts of numerous illnesses. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, minorities are disproportionally impacted by mental illnesses. Educational institutions play a role in supporting public policy to reduce health inequalities. It is recommended to further the development of behavioral health science-related courses and professional opportunities for Mission College students.

Hi Jeff, Given this appears to be a non-credit program it would not need to come through BACCC for regional recommendation. Likewise for future, any regional recommendations require that Centers of Excellence data be attached. Colleges can also attach any of their own data, but we can only process requests that have the COE data. By all means let me know if you have any questions! Kit (650) 274-5236 c
