Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The Optical Dispensing Technician Certificate of Achievement is an 11-unit program designed to be completed in two semesters. The curriculum combines foundational health science education with specialized optical training to prepare students for entry-level positions in the vision care industry and for national certification exams.

Students begin the program by developing essential healthcare competencies. In HS 061: Medical Terminology, students learn the language of healthcare with an emphasis on ocular anatomy, visual disorders, and terminology relevant to optical settings. HS 067: Introduction to Medical Dosage Calculations builds critical math skills used in interpreting optical prescriptions and measuring lens parameters.

In the second semester, students gain proficiency in healthcare informatics through HS 074: Informatics for Health Science, where they learn to use electronic health records and manage optical inventory systems in compliance with legal and ethical standards. The program culminates in HS 069: Optical Dispensing Technician, a capstone course providing hands-on laboratory training in lens fitting, frame adjustments, contact lens dispensing, and the daily operations of an optical dispensary.

This structured course sequence ensures students are well-prepared to sit for the National Opticianry Competency Examination (NOCE) and the Contact Lens Registry Examination (CLRE), and to enter the workforce with the skills needed for success in optical dispensaries, vision care centers, and related healthcare environments.
