This comprehensive program equips students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive as library assistants, library technicians, and library support staff. With a focus on practical application combined with library principles, graduates emerge ready to excel in public, academic, school, and special libraries, and other information-related industries. The program provides students with skills in library operations, public service, library collections including print and electronic resources, technology, and workplace communication. This program aligns with the American Library Association's (ALA) Library Support Staff Certification program.
We estimate 30 completers annually.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The Library Technology program prepares students to be paraprofessional library technicians, library assistants, and other support staff. Students will receive the theory and practical experience needed to earn employment in school, public, special, academic libraries, and related information settings. Developed in consultation with industry experts and employers, the program’s curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the field. Students engage in coursework that is constructed to prepare them for library operations, public service, library collections including print and electronic resources, technology, and workplace communication. The curriculum focuses on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, Anti-Racism (DEISA) and other inclusionary principles, preparing students to effectively assist a diverse range of library users and needs.

- Articulate an understanding of library principles and skills with a focus on embracing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, Anti-Racism (DEISA) and other inclusionary principles.
- Apply an understanding of library principles and skills to effectively serve diverse communities within library settings.

There are no similar programs offered at Mt. San Antonio College. The Library Department currently offers library research courses, but we have not offered career education courses previously. The creation of this program does not require any inventory records to be inactive or changed. This program does not replace any existing programs

As required by the LARC Program Recommendation Process, which is outlined on the LARC Program Recommendation webpage (https://losangelesrc.org/program-recommendation/), the LA Workforce Council Voting Members must be included in the collegial consultation process for new programs.
