Program Proposal Attributes
- A.S. Degree (S)
The Interior Design Associate in Science degree prepares students for transfer to four-year programs and for entry-level positions in the interior design industry. The program’s goal is to develop creative, technically skilled, and equity-minded designers who can plan functional, aesthetic, and sustainable interior spaces.
Objectives include: providing students with a foundation in design theory, textiles, materials, and digital drafting; fostering communication skills through visual and verbal presentations; and promoting awareness of cultural, ethical, and environmental considerations in design. The program also aligns with California’s Vision for Success by supporting degree completion, transfer readiness, and workforce preparation through the articulation of key courses with CSU programs and by responding to regional labor market needs for trained design professionals.

Course Report
The Interior Design Associate Degree provides a foundation in design principles, materials, and professional practices that prepare students for transfer or entry-level employment in interior design, retail, or product representation. Core courses include FASH 101, INTD 100, INTD 170, FASH 103, INTD 171, and INTD 172, offering a progression from design fundamentals and textiles through materials application and studio projects. Students also complete two elective courses (6 units) from related disciplines such as art, architecture, or business to support individual interests, career pathways, or transfer university depending on the student's focus. The program structure reflects input from the Interior Design Advisory Board, which includes representatives from design firms and interior design wholesale showrooms, who emphasize the need for graduates with practical design skills, product knowledge, and communication proficiency.
The program sequence builds creative and technical skills through hands-on projects, design analysis, and portfolio development. Each course supports program learning outcomes focused on design communication, problem solving, and material knowledge. The program will continue to use existing faculty, facilities, and equipment, requiring no additional resources. This revision updates the program name from Family and Consumer Science – Interior Design Merchandising to Interior Design to align with current industry terminology and better reflect the program’s focus and outcomes. The term “Merchandising” no longer reflects industry practice or the program’s learning objectives. Advisory board members noted that employers and students identify more readily with Interior Design as a distinct discipline, and that clarity in the program title will support marketing, recruitment, and transfer articulation.
