Catalog Description
The Department of Arts and Letters offers an undergraduate Certificate in American Sign Language (ASL). This certificate program should lead students to: a high degree of proficiency in ASL; an understanding of the structure of ASL as a visual/gestural language; and an understanding of important issues in deaf culture and education. This certificate program could conveniently accompany various undergraduate majors including, but not limited to, linguistics, speech pathology, communication science, and various undergraduate disciplines that serve as the basis for graduate-level degrees and certificates in many University in Unites States.
Enrollment Completer Projections
WHCC will enroll 20 individuals in every programs and will complete at least 14 with a certificate of completion. This certificate will also be offered through dual enrollment at our local high schools.

Program Goal
Students will have a great understanding of ASL, Deaf culture, and ASL history. Student will also learn about the many varied products of Deaf culture such as ASL poetry, ASL narrations, art made by Deaf people, and videos of ASL literature, in terms of underlying cultural values and attitudes. Also, a strong focus on the cultural products of the Deaf community and how the products relate to the traditions, beliefs, and structures of society. Students will be given opportunities to use American Sign Language to exchange personal information and address a variety of topic selected by instructor. Students will also use ASL as a tool to access additional resources related to ASL and Deaf culture
