ITEM 1. PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The Data and Information Design Certificate prepares students for careers in data visualization, information design, and analytics communication. Students create interactive data visualizations that translate complex information into accessible formats, develop AI-powered workflows that enhance visual storytelling, and design information systems that deliver content through accessible interfaces.

The certificate is open to all students and includes the following Program Learning Outcomes.

1. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to design conversational agents that recognize user intent and manage information delivery through dialogue-based interfaces.

2. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to develop AI-powered data curation workflows that enhance visual storytelling and reveal insights across mobile and web interfaces.

3. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to create interactive data visualizations that translate complex patterns into accessible displays for diverse audiences using web-based platforms.

The certificate prepares students for employment as Data Visualization Designers, Information Designers, Dashboard Specialists, Analytics Communication Designers, Conversational Interface Designers, and AI Content Curators.

ITEM 4. MASTER PLANNING

The Data and Information Design Certificate prepares students for the growing demand in data visualization and information design within the Multimedia Arts Mobile and Web (MM/MW) department at Berkeley City College. AI tools increasingly support data curation, pattern identification, and visual narrative creation across digital platforms. Since 2022, demand for professionals who can translate complex data into accessible visual stories has grown across technology, media, and public sector industries.

This certificate supports BCC's mission of providing educational opportunities that lead to careers by addressing regional demand for designers who work with data as a visual medium. The program is open to all students. All courses are available as distance education. No significant new expenditure is required. The program uses existing faculty, facilities, and equipment within the MM/MW department.

ITEM 5. ENROLLMENT AND COMPLETER PROJECTIONS

The Data and Information Design certificate is led by MM/MW 006 (formerly MMART 114), which has been offered in the program for multiple years and currently enrolls 48 students annually across two sections. MM/MW 019 (formerly MMART 162) maintains steady enrollment around 20 students per offering. MM/MW 020 (formerly MMART 171) has been updated to reflect current industry focus on blockchain and digital asset design.

This certificate requires MM/MW 006, MM/MW 019, and MM/MW 020, with students selecting two electives from MM/MW 001, MM/MW 002, MM/MW 005, and MM/MW 017. All courses are drawn from a shared discipline schedule of 7 sections per semester serving all four certificates and the AA degree simultaneously. MM/MW 017 enters the schedule in Year Two by shifting MM/MW 004 to a once-a-year offering, keeping the section count steady. Program completion is projected at 20 to 25 students annually by the end of Year Two.

Goal of Program

CTE & Transfer

Include any other information you would like to share.
The Data and Information Design Certificate prepares students to work with data as a design medium, translating complex information into visual and interactive formats. This certificate is expected to attract students interested in data communication who may not identify with traditional data science or computer science programs. Students can move between this certificate and other MM/MW certificates, applying shared elective coursework across programs. The program does not replace any existing BCC programs.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.

ITEM 7. SIMILAR PROGRAMS AT OTHER COLLEGES IN SERVICE AREA

There are no similar programs combining data visualization design with AI-powered information systems at community colleges within the BCC service area. Existing data programs at nearby colleges focus on data science, database administration, or business analytics rather than the visual design approach to data communication that this certificate provides. Laney College offers an AI program focused on programming and machine learning engineering, which serves a different student population and career pathway.
