Program Goal
This Associate in Arts in Law, Public Policy and Society for Transfer degree is a program of study intended to meet the objectives of the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (Senate Bill 1440, now codified in California Education Code sections 66746-66749), guaranteeing admission to a California State University (CSU) to students completing an “associate degree for transfer.” This newly established associate degree is aligned with the Transfer Model Curriculum in Law, Public Policy and Society and prepares the students to transfer for completion of upper division coursework in similar majors at a CSU campus. Addtionally, the Associate of Arts in Law, Public Policy and Society for Transfer Degree is designed for students wishing to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a California State University and fulfills lower division requirements for majors such as American Studies, Communications, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Global Intelligence and National Security, International Relations, Philosophy, Political Science, Social Behavioral Sciences (Political Economy Concentration). The interdisciplinary area of emphasis provides students with a broad set of foundational courses that introduces students to the legal field and emphasizes the development of communication skills designed to maximize their transfer success. The degree is good preparation for law school upon completion of a bachelor’s degree. The Business Administration Department will increase the number of students who receive a degree or certificate, are employed after exiting college and at a job related to field of study. Program will develop partnerships with businesses, non-profits and government and host legal aid clinics. Goal: develop a career pathway, augmented by an on-campus legal aid center where ELAC students gain skills and experience with program partners providing free legal services to students and the community.
