The Certificate of Achievement in Special Needs & Neurodiversity is designed for students seeking to specialize in working with children who have special needs across early care and elementary educational settings. This program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the developmental characteristics, needs, and learning differences of children from birth through age eight. By integrating theories and principles of child development and special education, students will learn to create inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive curricula that accommodate diverse learning needs and abilities.

Throughout the program, students will gain experience in developing individualized learning plans, designing adaptive environments, and implementing strategies that support children who are neurodiverse and have special needs. In addition, students will engage in case studies, collaborative projects, and practical applications that prepare them to evaluate and adapt instructional strategies for children with special needs.

This certificate is stackable with other Child Development and Education certificates offered by Los Angeles Harbor College, providing a pathway to further educational opportunities, such as an Associate Degree or transfer to a four-year university program in Child Development, Human Development, or Teacher Education.

Program Goals and Objectives
            The Certificate of Achievement in Special Needs & Neurodiversity equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to support children with diverse learning needs and developmental variations. Throughout the program, students will explore evidence-based strategies for creating inclusive environments and gain an understanding of how to support neurodiversity in educational and care settings. Students will design age-appropriate, individualized activities that address the unique needs of children who are neurodivergent, fostering an environment of belonging and learning for all. They will synthesize current research and theories in child development, special education, and neurodiversity to create educational plans that support the diverse developmental trajectories of children.

Additionally, students will develop the skills to communicate effectively with families, educators, and interdisciplinary teams to advocate for children with special needs, ensuring that educational and developmental supports are aligned with each child’s strengths and needs. They will also gain foundational knowledge of various assistive technologies and adaptations that can be used to enhance learning, communication, and engagement for children with special needs while understanding their potential impact on development. Throughout the program, students will critically evaluate and suggest modifications to learning environments, ensuring they are supportive of all children, including those with physical, cognitive, and social-emotional variances in development.

During the program, students will participate in collaborative discussions and projects with peers, focusing on real-world applications and evidence-based practices for supporting children with special needs and children who are neurodivergent. By the end of the program, students will be prepared to work in a variety of educational and care settings, supporting children with special needs and children who are neurodivergent through inclusive, research-based practices.

The Certificate of Achievement in Special Needs & Neurodiversity provides foundational knowledge and skills for students interested in working with children who have diverse developmental needs. With this certificate, students may qualify for entry-level roles such as early intervention assistants, instructional aides, or paraprofessionals in educational settings that support children who are neurodivergent or have special needs. Additionally, students may find opportunities as behavioral aides or assistant teachers in early childhood and special education settings, working under the guidance of licensed professionals.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Certificate of Achievement in Special Needs and Neurodiversity is a 21-unit program that can be completed in three semesters. Students begin with CH DEV 001 and 011, exploring foundational theories of development while examining how culture, identity, and family systems shape a child’s growth and learning. In the second semester, CH DEV 002, 007, and 045 invite students to design responsive, inclusive experiences that honor the unique ways children learn and communicate. The final semester includes CH DEV 034 and 044, where students hone their skills in observation, reflection, and planning for children with diverse developmental paths. This program centers neurodiversity and prepares students to create environments where every child is seen, valued, and supported.

The proposed Certificate of Achievement in Child Development focusing on Special Needs and Neurodiversity does not replace any existing programs in the college’s current inventory; instead, it complements our existing Child Development and Education programs. This certificate addresses the increasing demand for specialized training in early care and education, specifically in working with children with special needs and neurodiversity.
