Bachelor of Science Degree: Electronic Digital Instrument
New Program
Commercial Music (100500)
09/09/24
The Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI) of Electronic Popular Music Bachelor of Science Degree program acknowledges that the computer, with user-configured software and performance controllers (EDI), is an instrument of the 21st century. This degree is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the performance and production of electronic popular music with an instrumental focus on EDI, including turntable controllers, push controllers, and other gesture controllers. Students will receive training, collaboration opportunities, and live and recording studio performance experience on computer controller instruments in solo performances, small groups, and large ensembles.
All courses designated as an upper division major requirement must be completed with a minimum grade of "C" (or "P") for each course in the major.
The first year of students will be comprised of a 24 student cohort. 15 students are expected to complete.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Baccalaureate of Science (B.S.) Degree
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI) Performance and Production of Electronic Popular Music is designed as part of a 2+2 program that will build on either the Rio Hondo College associate’s degree or a degree from an accredited college or university. Under both scenarios, graduates will be admitted to the EDI Performance Program as third-year juniors to complete the baccalaureate degree within two years. This degree program is a response to a number of barriers to entry to traditional commercial music BA programs. This program was designed and created to respond to a population of students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree and a career in music without a strong musical background or proficiency with a traditional musical instrument. There exists a requirement by CSU four-year baccalaureate programs to be proficient with a musical instrument and pass an audition prior to admission. The Rio Hondo College music program leadership and faculty believe that traditional musical instrument skills should not be necessary nor a barrier to a successful career in music.
