Catalog Description

The Fire Technology Certificate Program at Bakersfield College is designed to prepare students for careers in firefighting and fire technology. It offers a strong foundation for those aspiring to join the fire service or advance within it. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students will gain critical knowledge and practical skills in fire behavior, prevention, and emergency response, equipping them to excel as firefighters or pursue leadership roles such as engineer, captain, or battalion chief. The program also provides existing firefighters with opportunities to enhance their qualifications and career prospects. With a flexible structure tailored to individual career goals, students can earn a Certificate of Achievement, pursue an associate degree, or gain transfer credits toward a bachelor’s degree in Fire Technology. Bakersfield College’s Accredited Regional Training Program, established in partnership with federal, state, and local fire agencies, ensures graduates are well-prepared for immediate employment and long-term success. Upon completion of the required courses with at least a “C” or “P” grade in each course, the student will be eligible for a Certificate of Achievement.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to assess the qualifications and entry-level skills for firefighter hiring.
2. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to analyze the following elements of the application process: The written exam, the physical agility exam, the oral interview, the chief's interview, and the background investigation.
3. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to evaluate fire and emergency incidents, and the components of emergency management and fire fighter safety practices and procedures.
