Catalog Description

The Landscape Design A.S. program at Pierce College prepares budding landscape designers to embark on an entrepreneurial endeavor

with confidence. Part of the preparation involves intimate knowledge

of blueprints, gardening, and the ability to design and use plant

materials, all fastened to a firm foundation in soil and plant science.

By the end, students will be familiar with over 500 ornamental,

sustainable, and California native plants and trees. With this fluency,

students are well-prepared to analyze site conditions and create an

aesthetically pleasing and artistic landscape that considers long-term

environmental suitability.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Approximately 3-4 students per year.

If this is a program modification, please provide a brief description of the changes to the program. A bulleted list of key changes is acceptable.

PART I – Change in the following MAJOR - REQUIRED COURSE/S:

ADD: PLNT SC 828 Sustainable Water Management (3), PLNT SC 822 Turfgrass management (3), PLNT SC 901 Natural Resources Management (3), PLNT SC 714 Principles of Horticulture (3)

DELETE: PLNT SC 820 Irrigation Design and Management (3), PLNT SC 806 Landscape Design and Management (3), PLNT SC 826 Computer Landscape Design (3), PLNT SC 816 Grading and Drainage Management (3)

Comment: The deleted courses are low demand and have not been offered for several consecutive semesters. PLNT SC 820 has been cancelled multiple times. PLNT SC 816 was offered in Fall 23 with 8 students. Students will take elective courses in the ARC Department to gain drafting experience previously covered in PLNT SC 806 & PLNT SC 826; these courses have been used as substitutes for PLNT SC 806 and PLNT SC 826 during the past few years. Meanwhile, PLNT SC 828 is part of the QWEL (Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper) Certification and PLNT SC 822 and PLNT SC 901 count toward the CA DPR Pest Control Adviser Certification. Making these changes will lead to a stronger program and less scrambling for classes on the part of students.

PART II – Change in the following MAJOR – ELECTIVE COURSE/S:

ADD: Choose 2 of the following courses for a minimum of 5 units: ARC 161 Intro to CAD (2), ARC 162 CAD and Drafting (3), ARC 172 Architectural Drawing I (3), or ARC 221 Architectural Rendering (2)

DELETE: PLNT SC 828 Sustainable Water Management, PLNT SC 714 Principles of Horticulture, PLNT SC 822 Turfgrass, PLNT SC 901 Natural Resources Management

Comment: There will no longer be emphases in this degree.

PART IV – OTHER CHANGES

Program Name: NA

Program Description: NA

Program Learning Outcomes: NA

PART V – RATIONALE

These courses have not been offered recently due to low demand. If they have been offered they have been canceled or offered with less than 12 students. Making these changes will lead to a stronger program and less scrambling for classes on the part of students.
