The Automotive Refinishing Multi-coat and Custom Paint Certificate Continues the course of study beyond the entry level certificate. Two and three stage OEM finishes along with custom applications of pearl, mica and candy refinishing processes are delivered within the course of study. Lettering, striping and graphic design are included within the content of the certificate. The course of study is designed around the advancement of skills and knowledge obtained within the Automotive Refinishing Certificate.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Automotive Refinishing Multi-coat and Custom Paint Certificate Continues the course of study beyond the entry level certificate. Two and three stage OEM finishes along with custom applications of pearl, mica and candy refinishing processes are delivered within the course of study. Lettering, striping and graphic design are included within the content of the certificate. The course of study is designed around the advancement of skills and knowledge obtained within the Automotive Refinishing Certificate. Prerequisite: Automotive Refinishing Certificate. 

The Automotive Multi-coat and Custom Paint Certificate option prepares students for employment as an entry level multi-coat and custom refinish technician. Through a combination of lecture and hands-on lab courses focusing on skills-based learning, students will explore two and three stage and custom refinish techniques. Preparation and masking of outer panels accompanied with intricate design through the use of sponge, brush and specialty spray equipment techniques found in automotive, motorcycle, marine, aircraft and many other industries that incorporate custom refinish and graphics on their products. Core topics include panel preparation and repairs, disassembly, primers, refinishing systems, spay equipment, graphic layout techniques, color matching, shading, tinting and safety. Design, function and operation of these subjects is included in the degree. Graduates are employed as entry level technicians, refinish technicians, custom painters, apprentice technicians or are self-employed.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  •  Students will demonstrate proper trouble-shooting techniques to solve refinishing problems and defects including the causes and cures for each.
  •  Students will demonstrate safe practices regarding personal, environmental, and facility in the handling, use and disposal of hazardous materials.
  •  Students will identify glamour and specialty finishes and describe methods for their duplication in automotive paint application.
  •  Students will properly assemble, set up, adjust, and spray automotive paints with a compliant professional spray gun.
  •  Students describe concepts used in layout of graphic design in automotive applications.
  •  Students properly mix and apply paint sprayed by air brush and provide proper top-coating to preserve and maintain applied artwork.
  •  Describe concepts used in layout of graphic design in automotive applications.
  •  Students properly mix and apply accessory paint as stripes, letters, graphic design, and special effects.
  •  Students use appropriate terminology and identify and select appropriate tools and materials used in custom painting.
  •  Students identify and select appropriate processes and materials for custom paint application of pearls and candies.
  •  Students demonstrate appropriate techniques used to create custom paint effects on automobiles.
  •  Students apply custom clear coat finishes to automobiles.
  •  Students color-sand and polish clear-coats to a custom, mirror-like finish.
