Darkroom Techniques, Certificate of Achievement

Aligned with the mission of the Foothill College Photography Department, the Certificate of Achievement in Darkroom Techniques offers a clear sequence of courses that develop both creative vision and technical proficiency while preparing students for career pathways in commercial and fine art photography. As the photographic industry becomes increasingly digital, there has been renewed demand from clients, galleries, and creative industries for photographers with strong film-based skills and darkroom expertise. Students learn to work with analog cameras and black and white film while developing competencies in film processing, darkroom printing, and archival printmaking. The program emphasizes craftsmanship, critical thinking, and professional workflow, while encouraging students to create thoughtful photographic projects. Graduates gain specialized skills highly valued in creative studios, galleries, museums, and media environments, and are prepared for full-time or freelance employment.

Because the 2025-2026 academic year marks the first year the Foothill darkroom has been operational in some time, enrollment data are still limited. However, student demand for darkroom courses has been consistently strong. Due to current budget constraints, the program is able to offer these courses in a stacked format each quarter. In Fall and Winter, the introductory and intermediate courses are offered together, and in Spring the advanced course is added to complete the sequence. Based on current enrollment patterns, it is anticipated that after the first full year at least ten students will be able to complete the certificate. Many students enter the darkroom sequence after taking PHOT 5 or PHOT 5H, which serves as an important entry point into analog photography. In addition, a number of seats in these courses are reserved for noncredit students, and the program is developing a mirrored noncredit certificate in Darkroom Techniques to support those learners

The Certificate of Achievement in Darkroom Techniques is designed to develop both academic understanding and workforce-ready skills in traditional photographic practice. Academically, the program introduces students to the principles of analog photography through progressive coursework in introductory, intermediate, and advanced darkroom techniques. Students learn to work with 35mm through 4×5 large-format cameras while developing skills in black and white film processing and darkroom printing. Throughout the curriculum, students engage with visual literacy, critical thinking, and the analysis of photographic imagery, while learning to conceptualize, plan, and execute photographic projects.

Vocationally, the certificate prepares students with specialized analog photography skills that are increasingly valued in creative industries seeking distinctive, handcrafted imagery in an era dominated by digital production. Students gain technical proficiency in film handling, exposure, negative development, and archival printmaking, along with experience managing projects from initial concept through final print/portfolio. These competencies support entry-level opportunities in photographic studios, labs, galleries, museums, and creative media environments, while also equipping students with the skills needed to pursue freelance work or establish independent photographic practices. The overall objective of the certificate is to integrate technical mastery, creative problem-solving, and professional workflow, in order to prepare students for continued study and for participation in contemporary photographic practice that values both analog craftsmanship and thoughtful visual communication.
