The Electric Vehicle and Alternative Propulsion Technician Certificate prepares students for in-demand careers in the clean transportation industry. This three-course program equips students with foundational knowledge through advanced skills in hybrid, battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle technology. Emphasis is placed on high-voltage safety, diagnostics, system operation, and service procedures using industry-standard tools and protocols. Students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge propulsion systems and develop the competencies required for entry-level technician positions in dealerships, independent repair facilities, fleet maintenance operations, and emerging green mobility sectors.
The current electric specialist certificate has about 7-10 completers annually, however, the shift in industry focus and growth of the EV/Hybrid market in California will necessitate the increased focus and emphasis in this skill area and result in higher student enrollment and completer numbers. We anticipate 19 annual completers with the introduction of this certificate, with the potential for increased completer numbers as the program transitions to our newer building/location in 2029.

The Electric Vehicle and Alternative Propulsion Technician Certificate primarily supports workforce preparation by equipping students with the hands-on skills and technical knowledge required for high-demand jobs in the clean transportation sector. The certificate also serves a local purpose by addressing regional workforce gaps in the Inland Empire, where there is growing employer demand for EV-trained technicians. Additionally, it contributes to basic skills development in electrical theory, diagnostics, and safety procedures, which are transferable across automotive and engineering technologies. The program's goals align with California’s efforts to build an inclusive green economy and prepare students for lifelong career advancement.

Course Report
This certificate program is comprised of three courses which students will complete over the course of one academic year (including on summer course offering). The three courses are Autotec-407 (Introduction to Hybrid Vehicles, 2.5 units), Autotec-408 (Electric Vehicle Systems and Diagnostics, 4.5 units), and Autotec-409 (Advanced Alternative Propulsion and Fuel Cell Technology, 4 units). Autotec-407 will be completed in summer, Autotec-408 in Fall, and Autotec-409 in Spring. Credit for prior learning options will be available for incumbent workers in industry (for example for workers that have foundational hybrid/ev training from a vehicle manufacturer).
