Course Report
The purpose of this program is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge in child development using practical strategies for creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that emphasize both theory and hands-on practice. Students will be prepared to meet the needs of diverse young children and their families as they enter the workforce as early childhood educators.
The Early Childhood Educator 1 Certificate at our college and LACCD is targeted at students and working professionals who aim to build their current knowledge, practices, and skills in the field of child development as educators. The curriculum focuses on the goals and objectives from four existing courses from The Child, Family, and Education Studies Department. The courses in this certificate can be seamlessly integrated into our current certificate and degree programming. It is anticipated that the (new or modified) certificate will not result in any reduced changes in enrollment with only a rise in enrollment anticipated. Students may also stack this certificate into an existing Associate’s degree within the department with minimal extra courses needed.
This certificate is aligned with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) Early Childhood Educator 1 Permit.

New Program
This program fits with the current certificate and degree programming as the entry level step. This certificate program has previously been recognized locally as a skills certificate program, but with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing updating their requirements, it is time to develop this into a recognized Certificate of Achievement. Students will take the core classes in this certificate, and will be able to stack on several other for specializations, or may continue on with GE's to complete an AA degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
All colleges within LACCD and within our regional area are offering programs similar to this one to provide students the opportunity to apply for teaching permit. This program provides the entry level educational requirement for the Early Childhood Education workforce.
