Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The Artistic Glass and Design Certificate at San Bernardino Valley College is designed to support workforce preparation by providing students with the technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills required in the art glass industry. The program emphasizes hands-on training in both traditional and contemporary glassmaking techniques, including hot glass processes such as glassblowing and kiln-formed methods. Students learn to apply design principles, practice professional studio and safety protocols, and refine their work using coldworking and advanced finishing methods. The curriculum’s focus on multi-step projects and collaborative production also fosters real-world competencies essential for employment or entrepreneurship in studio art, design, and related creative industries.

Beyond workforce readiness, the program also addresses local and civic educational goals by encouraging students to explore and integrate diverse cultural and artistic traditions within their glasswork. Through critiques, presentations, and written analysis, students develop critical thinking and communication skills that are vital to articulating artistic intent and engaging with broader audiences. The inclusive approach to artistic expression nurtures a deeper understanding of global and local art practices, promoting cultural awareness and community engagement. By preparing a professional portfolio, students leave the program ready to pursue careers or further education, contributing to the regional creative economy and cultural landscape.
