Program Goal

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The Creative AI Design Associate of Arts updates the Mobile and Web Design degree to reflect the transformation of design practice by artificial intelligence. The degree provides broad preparation across creative AI tools, user experience, data visualization, application development, and immersive technologies. Since 2022, employers across creative and technology industries increasingly seek designers with AI fluency who can work across multiple media and delivery platforms. This degree prepares students for careers in visual design, creative technology, UX design, data visualization, and AI-assisted media production. The degree is open to all students and includes the following Program Learning Outcomes. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. produce a professional portfolio demonstrating AI-assisted design work across visual, audio, interactive, and data-driven media.

2. lead creative projects that integrate AI tools into human-centered design workflows, balancing technological capability with ethical judgment and aesthetic standards.

3. communicate design decisions to technical and non-technical audiences, translating between creative intent and AI system capabilities.

The degree prepares students for direct employment as AI Visual Designers, Creative Technologists, UX Designers, Data Visualization Designers, Immersive Experience Designers, and AI Design Project Leads.

ITEM 4. MASTER PLANNING

The Creative AI Design Associate of Arts sits within BCC's Multimedia Arts Mobile and Web (MM/MW) department and updates the Mobile and Web Design degree. The degree integrates coursework across four certificate areas, allowing students to build broad expertise across the full spectrum of AI-assisted design practice or concentrate in areas aligned with their career goals. This structure supports BCC's mission of providing educational opportunities that lead to careers. The program is open to all students. All courses are available as distance education. No significant new expenditure is required. The program uses existing faculty, facilities, and equipment.

ITEM 5. ENROLLMENT AND COMPLETER PROJECTIONS

The Creative AI Design Associate of Arts degree draws from all 11 courses in the MM/MW discipline. Ten of these courses have been offered continuously for multiple years under their prior MMART designations and are generating strong enrollment under their updated course numbers. The highest-enrollment courses include MM/MW 001 (60 students annually), MM/MW 011 (62 annually), MM/MW 006 (48 annually), and MM/MW 004 (39 annually). MM/MW 002, MM/MW 003, MM/MW 005, MM/MW 012, MM/MW 019, and MM/MW 020 each maintain stable enrollment in the 20 to 35 student range per offering. The discipline maintains a consistent schedule of 7 sections per semester across both years. Ten courses run in Year One across 14 annual sections, totaling approximately 353 students.  MM/MW 017 is the only new course in the program and launches in Year Two, with MM/MW 004 shifting to a once-a-year offering to keep the total steady. Students complete 36 major units by taking all six required courses and selecting three electives from the remaining five.

Degree completion is projected at 20 to 25 students annually by the end of Year Two.

ITEM 6. PLACE OF PROGRAM IN CURRICULUM/SIMILAR PROGRAMS The Creative AI Design Associate of Arts provides the broadest preparation within BCC's MM/MW program, integrating coursework from all four certificate areas into a single degree pathway. Students who complete one or more certificates can apply that coursework toward the degree. The program is expected to attract students seeking a credential that demonstrates broad AI design competency to employers. The program does not replace any existing BCC programs. It updates and renames the Mobile and Web Design degree.

Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.

ITEM 7. SIMILAR PROGRAMS AT OTHER COLLEGES IN SERVICE AREA There are no similar associate degree programs combining AI-assisted visual design, sound design, user experience, data visualization, application development, and immersive technologies at community colleges within the BCC service area. Existing multimedia degrees at nearby colleges focus on traditional graphic design, web development, or general media production without integrating AI tools across the full curriculum. Laney College offers AI courses focused on programming and machine learning engineering, which serve a different student population and career pathway.
