Catalog Description

The Modern Police Science baccalaureate program will prepare students for careers in the law
enforcement profession. The program will train students to perform the duties of law
enforcement officers and public security officers. These duties include patrol and investigative
activities, public relations, evidence collection and management, witness interviewing, basic
crime prevention methods, report preparation, and other law enforcement responsibilities.

The following table summarizes enrollment data, overall course count, census enrollment, and FTES data for the last four years. As you will notice, the Administration of Justice program consistently enrolls over 900 students per year with an impressive 94% retention and an 86% success rate.


Pre-pandemic, the justice program at Porterville College consistently reported over 900 student enrollments annually. Many of these students have expressed an interest in obtaining bachelor’s degrees in pursuit of a law enforcement career.

Program Goal

Program Prerequisite: completion of Porterville College’s Modern Police Science AS or
comparable associates program (subject to discipline faculty review) prior to enrollment in upper
division courses.
Enrollment Limitations: Students within the baccalaureate path should maintain a 2.5 GPA or
better at all times to be in good standing with the program and eligible to continue.
Program Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the technical procedures law enforcement officers are involved in: equipment
operation and maintenance, crime prevention, patrol and investigative activities, arrest,
evidence collection and management, report writing, court preparation and testimony, and
case disposition.
2. Analyze the role of law enforcement in American society from diverse perspectives.
3. Analyze laws, codes, and policies relevant to public safety duties.

Identify the importance of cooperation between courts, corrections, and law enforcement
within the criminal justice system.
5. Demonstrate critical thinking skills and social awareness through the scholarly analysis
of events involving the police, civil rights, and the American people.
Proposed Degree Detail
The proposed degree contains 42 units of upper-division coursework, including 9 units of
upper-division general education courses. These courses will develop skills specific to the law
enforcement officer profession, which are not typically included in Criminal Justice Bachelor’s
degrees. The degree also seeks to address the listed areas of focus within CA AB 89. Students
obtain relevant and practical hands-on instruction for their future or existing law enforcement
career.
