The Certificate of Achievement in Community Outreach, Social Justice, and Health will prepare students with the skills and knowledge to enter the public health field as a Community Health Worker. This 11-unit certificate program will educate and empower students to successfully serve in community-involved, equity-driven health professions with the skills and core knowledge of community health practice. Students will understand root causes of community health issues and health disparities, assess the health needs of the diverse populations they serve, and develop and implement equity-driven, community-involved health education activities. Students will gain in-field experience with local health organizations to implement the concepts and best practices they have learned through the program.
An estimated average of 20 students would earn this Certificate of Achievement annually, based on current trends of both course enrollment in AHLTH 1 and degrees awarded in Public Health Science for Transfer. It is highly likely that enrollment will increase annually, as student enrollment in the AHLTH 1 course has doubled in size (from 29 to 60 students enrolled) since it was first taught at Fresno City College in Fall 2019. With the approval of this Certificate of Achievement, Fresno City College faculty and staff can inform and encourage students who enroll in AHLTH 1 to complete the Certificate of Achievement as part of their educational journey. v

The goal of this Certificate is to educate and empower students to successfully serve in community-involved, equity-driven public health professions with the skills and core knowledge of community health practice. Students who complete this Certificate will be trained in the necessary skills to successfully implement community health outreach activities.
