Bay Area Regional Questions

Goal of Program

CTE

Include any other information you would like to share.
The Mechatronic Technology Program at Mission College is designed to 1. serve between 400-500 employers in the region seeking talent in technical skills, 2. serve more than 200 high schools in the Bay Area with students not transferring to 4-year universities, and 3. meet Industry demand for 2-year technician-level candidates seeking to stay in the Bay Area and earn a livable wage ($25-35 per hour) after college. Mechatronics is the field which is building talent in the 21st century and beyond. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Advanced Manufacturing, Block Chain Technology are all fields that are growing. On-the-Job assignments, internships, apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities are perfect for Mechatronic careers. This type of new and innovative program would fill a void at Mission College based on location, population of technical students, working class students from local high schools and those who enroll in courses to upgrade their skills. In addition, there is no comparable AS degree or Certificate of Achievement programs in existence among community colleges in our Santa Clara County service area. Mission College has a number of grant-funded programs requiring employment in Mechatronics such as ANNAPISI, NSF INCLUDES Alliance (STEM Core), SVHTAI, MESA, HSI-STEM. This program would serve the following industries: Advanced Manufacturing/Semiconductor, Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical/Quality, Transportation/Logistics, Electric and Hybrid Vehicles, Medical Equipment, Biotechnology, Aerospace/Defense, and Construction. The Mechatronic Technology program would strengthen the college and complement the CTE programs such as Business, IT, Graphic Design, health-related programs, and our transfer Engineering program. The expected outcome might look like a small uptick in enrollment in the first 2 years of the program. But shortly after, we expect a much higher number of students enrolling in the courses to earn the degree/certificate and get a job in the field. The target audience would be students from the high schools, adult education programs, alternative high schools and industry employees attending class in the evening. Students completing the program will have an option of choosing the engineering or technologist path if they so choose and transfer to a 4-year university. Mechatronic Technology program will meet the needs and demand of our high-tech employers in the bay area. Our program will also develop and broadly publicize industry-informed career pathways that prepare students for jobs needed within the regional labor market as well as broaden and enhance career exploration and planning and work-based learning opportunities for our CTE students.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
There are no similar programs in Santa Clara County
