Catalog Description
The audiovisual technician associate in science degree is designed to prepare students for the Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) certification exam administered by AVIXA International and entry-level jobs in the audiovisual industry. Audiovisual technicians set up and operate audio and video equipment including microphones, sound speakers, video screens, projectors, video monitors, recording equipment, connecting wires and cables, sound and mixing boards, and related electronic equipment for concerts, sports events, meetings and conventions, presentations, and news conferences. AV systems facilitate essential communications and often require connectivity with various types of networks, requiring AV technicians to work with IT teams to set up and maintain that connectivity. This aspect of audiovisual technology is evolving, influencing industry demand and the need for new curriculum. Degree-seeking students complete general education requirements that help students “think and communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; to use mathematics; to understand the modes of inquiry of the major disciplines; to be aware of other cultures and times; to achieve insights gained through experience in thinking about ethical problems; and to develop the capacity for self-understanding”. (Title 5, section 55061)1. Analyze and describe the science and technology for basic audio, visual and audiovisual systems integration. 2. Set up and test an audio, video, and audiovisual network. 3. Describe and explain the components of sound and hearing, and vision and light as they pertain to human perception and venue limitations. 4. Display proper customer service and professional behavior.
Enrollment Completer Projections
The music industry studies program has been tracking its data separate from the music program since 2013-14. The following charts indicate the enrollment and completion data for that program. It is anticipated that the addition of the AV Technology degree and certificate programs will double the number of completions annually. Since only two sections of coursework are added to the schedule, impact on FTES will be small, estimated at an annual increase of 35.44 Year 2013-14 2014-15 2015-16 2016-17 Total degrees 11 8 8 10 Total certificates 17 14 13 8 Total FTES enrollment NA 104.7 101.8 99.4 Program fill rate NA 83.1% 84.9% 84.4%

Program Goal
Diablo Valley College's Music Industry Studies (MIS) program, CCSF’s Broadcast Electronic Media Arts (BEMA) department, and Laney’s Media Communications department have collaborated in a Year 1 SWP project to develop CTE programs aligned with AVIXA International’s Certified Technology Specialist certificate, a nationally-recognized audiovisual (AV) professional credential. DVC has developed and approved the courses for the certificate and plans to offer sections each year, with an official program start targeted for Fall 2018. AVIXA International is the trade association representing the professional audiovisual and information communications industries worldwide and working closely in support this program’s development. The $85 billion AV industry is growing rapidly and AV professionals earn an excellent living in a rapidly changing, high-tech field. However, along with this growth, there is a “graying out” of the current workforce and AVIXA is concerned that there are not enough qualified new entrants. At this time, there is no supply coming from Bay Area community college to meet this demand.

The music industry studies program department has offered courses and a degree and certificate for many years. Students currently have the opportunity to earn a degree or certificate in music industry studies that focus on recording, mixing, publication, broadcast, and small business skills. The proposed AV technology program will provide students with preparation for industry certification and focus on skill sets designed to prepare them for entry-level employment in a variety of venues, since AV skills across many sectors of the economy – business, hospitality, healthcare, and information technology.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
This application will not cause undue competition with existing programs at other colleges as the curriculum has been designed by a regional collaborative to ensure consistency in addressing industry standards for the certification. DVC will be the first college in the East Bay to propose a full program in AV technology. Laney College and City College or San Francisco may also offer the core coursework and investigate specialized, more advanced courses to enhance the breadth of offerings in our service area. There are no specific needs for new or additional facilities or equipment to offer this program, as it represents an enhancement to existing coursework, not a departure from current offerings. This program is offered as open enrollment, and is not offered in close collaboration with specific employers.
