Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

Item 1.            Program Goals and Objectives

Laney College currently offers a wide range of courses in Carpentry. The program prepares students for a career in the construction industry, either as self-employed carpenters, employees or as General Contractors. Our students are trained in basic construction and advanced practices and methods of construction. We do this by building and remodeling residential homes in the community in cooperation with the City of Oakland and the Oakland Rotary. We emphasize green, sustainable and high performance building. Elements of our program include best building practices in energy efficiency, weatherization and digital fabrication.

Program Outcomes

·        Communicate effectively in the technical language of the Carpentry/Construction Trades, including written, verbal and mathematical computation skills.

·        Develop a foundation of core skills necessary to safely operate power tools and equipment used to build, repair and remodel homes to current code requirements.

·        Analyze building components in order to determine the proper execution of construction or repair.

Item 6.            Place of Program in Curriculum/Similar Programs

a)     There are no active inventory records that need to be changed in connection with the approval of the proposed program.

b)     This program does not replace any existing program on the college’s inventory.

c)     There are no related programs offered by the college. Laney does offer a CA and AS in Advanced Carpentry.

Item 7.            Similar Programs at Other Colleges in Service Area

Laney is the only college in the district that offers carpentry curriculum.  Outside of our district, no other college in our service area offers a CA in Intermediate Carpentry. CCSF does have a Carpentry CA but only 2 courses are somewhat similar.
