Goal of Program

CTE

Include any other information you would like to share.

There is a substantial need for electric vehicle technicians. Today, only 2% of the total vehicles driven in California are electric but by 2035, 20% of the vehicles will be electric. There is a shortage of electric vehicle technicians, and more are needed in the future.  Modern automobile technicians will have to exhibit a higher level of understanding of electronics. They will need to be able to diagnose advanced electrical circuits.  Our beginning electrical classes entice students into the program. Student certificates add value to the student’s training and help “push” them to take more classes in technology. This new certificate will help attract non-traditional auto students to the program. We have added EV technology to all our existing auto courses.  This makes for a more comprehensive automotive program where students are ready to work on a variety of different types of vehicles.  Cars will incorporate more electronics and EV technology as the industry continues to evolve.

California Energy Commission teamed up with VELOZ to track electric vehicle sales. https://www.energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/zero-emission-vehicle-and-infrastructure-statistics-collection

According to VELOZ, https://www.veloz.org/ev-market-report/, California EV sales make up 40% of all electric vehicle sales in the US. And, California had record high sales of EV from 2022 through Q1 2024.

Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.

There are no other Certificates of Achievement offerings in the North Bay area.  Napa and Solano currently do not offer Electric Vehicle certificatesSanta Rosa Junior College offeronly a skills certificate for an electric and electronic systems specialist.

San Francisco City offers a Certificate of Achievement which was just approved in 2023. Chabot and Evergreen offer Certificates of Achievement.
