Program Requirements Narrative

The Digital Media Interactive Game Design program fulfills the mission statement of the Long Beach Community College District by providing workforce development that meets the needs of student in our area. This program will train students in critical 21st century skills needed for employment within the southern California creative economy.  This program speaks directly to the value of excellence promoted at our college by providing innovative approaches to multidisciplinary curriculum within the Visual and Media Arts Department. Students completing this program will be able to enter in to a variety of available positions within the Digital Media industry.

The DMA program upholds the LBCC Mission and ‘is committed to providing equitable student learning and achievement, academic excellence, and workforce development by delivering high quality educational programs and support services to our diverse communities.’ In particular, the area of Interaction and Game Design represents an opportunity to give visibility, through digital story-telling, to our diverse student body. While traditionally underserving non-majority groups, the mainstream comics and animation field, this industry is currently in a transformative moment where we are celebrating diverse narratives and raising up talent from the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. This new certificate program helps to raise our students up to be a part of this transformative moment in a highly influential and fast-growing industry that finds its center largely in Los Angeles and the wider Southern California community.

Program Modification

Place of program in college's curriculum/similar program
This program creates a content focus within Digital Media Arts, distinguishing Interaction and Game design from the Comics/ Animation and Graphic Design courses & certificates. While some of the core course overlap for fundamental DMA skills, this certificate specifies a path for students interested in Interactive and Non-linear applications as well as Virtual and Augmented Reality. In addition to supporting DMA students, it also gives collaboration opportunities for faculty and students in the drawing, painting, illustration, and film areas which also deal with visual storytelling.
