Catalog Description

This entry-level program prepares students with practical skills and knowledge to work with people with disabilities in a variety of educational and rehabilitation settings. Additionally, the courses are intended to introduce students to career opportunities in special education or other disability related fields, and can provide preparation for transfer to four-year institutions to continue a course of study in general education and special education. Classes are designed to serve working individuals wishing to improve their applied skills and professional growth. To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each courses used to meet a certificate requirement with a “C” grade or higher. Required courses are available in the evening and during the day.

Enrollment Completer Projections

10 students will complete the program requirements per year. This is a low-unit certificate that leads to a higher-unit certificate (18 units). This certificate is designed for both individuals who intend to continue their studies in special education as well as for other educational professionals who desire a thorough grounding in theories, laws, and issues in special education.

Program Goal

Current research shows industry related to educational professionals such as elementary teachers, paraprofessionals and special education teachers are in need of additional professional development in coursework related to disabilities. This aligns with the teacher preparation pipeline and workforce development needs. Diablo Valley College is the only Community College that offers such in-depth curriculum in this subject. This program offers occupational training that is of value to a variety of individuals who work with special education students.
