Catalog Description
The Certificate of Accomplishment in Construction Management: Core Skills is a course of study focused on the core technical and management skills required in the field of Construction Management. This certificate is designed to meet the needs of students who want to obtain entry-level positions within the Construction Management profession. It also provides students who are currently employed in the construction industry in trades positions the opportunity for entry and/or advancement in management positions. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this program, students will be able to: • Use project management methodologies to plan and control construction work activities. • Analyze and interpret construction document. • Assess the contractual and regulatory considerations and restraints associated with the administration of a construction project. • Communicate effectively in a professional construction management work environment. The minimum time for completion of this certificate is 2 semesters. Completion time will vary based on student preparation and number of classes completed per semester.
Enrollment Completer Projections
From the enrollment in the Construction Management courses, we project the following: • There are approximately 159 students currently taking Construction Management Courses. For the 2016/17 academic year, 11 students completed the Core Skills Certificate of Accomplishment that is currently offered. • Due to course prerequisites, completion of the current Core Skills Certificate of Accomplishment requires three semesters. • The new Core Skills Certificate of Achievement has been designed to enable completion within two semesters. • As some of the classes required by the revised Core Skills Certificate of Achievement Program differ from the current Core Skills Certificate of Accomplishment Program, we do not anticipate an increase in completion rates during the first semester. By the end of the second semester, we expect program completers to increase to 22 annual completers, better reflecting current enrollment. As the Core Skills Certificate of Achievement Program becomes more widely known, both to students and employers, we expect increases in program completion. There has already been interest expressed by employers to our offering this revised certificate program. This seems to confirm the unmet need for qualified individuals in the field of Construction Management which is cited by current labor market data.

Program Goal

In 2009 the Architecture Department, which houses our Construction Management program, created two new certificates:• A locally-approved 15-unit certificate in Construction Management: Core Skills• A 30-unit Certificate of Achievement in Construction Management: Advanced Skills. Based upon discussions with our Advisory Board, it was determined that revisions were required to our Core Skills Certificate Program. These revisions reflect changes in the Construction Management Industry that have taken place since the current programs were created, keeping our programs aligned with industry needs. The revised Core Skills Program is designed to enable completion within two semesters. The current Core Skills program, consisting of CM 100, CM 110, CM 240, CM 244, and CM 248, requires a minimum of three semesters to complete, due to class prerequisites. Together, these revisions will increase the effectiveness of the Core Skills Program by better meeting the requirements for entry-level positions and by allowing students to complete this program in a reduced time frame. Two courses, CM 240 and CM 244, were removed from the previous Core Skills Program, and three courses, CM 10, BIM 120 and BSEN 74, have been added. The changes have raised the unit total to 19 units, necessitating State Chancellor’s Office approval.

Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
As the requested change is a revision to an existing locally-approved certificate program, and the department already has an existing Certificate of Achievement in Construction Management: Advanced Skills, we do not anticipate any adverse impacts on other colleges in the service area.
