Comic & Graphic Novel Production

This certificate prepares students for entry level careers in the Graphic Arts with an emphasis on comic and graphic novel development and production. This includes skill building instruction in concept development, character design, narrative illustration, story structure, and sequential art for comic and graphic novels. Classes are structured to give strong academic and hands-on experience in sequential art and production techniques using the latest equipment and software available.

The Comic and Graphic Novel Production certificate, offered by the Applied Digital Media and Printing program, provides prospective learners from a diverse community with hands-on training in the fields of comic and graphic novel designing and publishing. Successful completion of this career-technical program will equip students with foundational skills and practical knowledge in all aspects of design elements, design principles, storytelling, sequential art, panel layout, production, and publication. Possible career outcomes for this program include: graphic artist, cartoonist, comic book artist, graphic novel creator, layout artist, illustrator, and self-publishing entrepreneur. Relevancy of this program is maintained via annual input from an advisory committee, employment data and industry feedback.

For this proposed Comic and Graphic Novel Production certificate, prospective students would need to complete five ADM classes that are offered regularly: ADM66, ADM71A, ADM77A, ADM63A and ADM55. These classes also do not have prerequisite, so students could choose to take them in whichever order that fits their schedules.
