Minimum Requirements for enrollment:

1.All applications must be fluent in Mandarin and English, and have a speakin gproficiency equivalent to that of an educated native speaker.

2.It is recommended that all applicants should have completed at least one term of college English.

3.All applicants must submit a Translation and Interpreting application to CTE Division.

4.All applicants must attend an orientation.

5.The prerequisites for curriculum/courses as following:

a.Consecutive Interpretation I: Pre-Req is Sight Translation

b.Consecutive Interpretation II: Pre-Req is Consecutive Interpretation I

c.Simultaneous Interpretation I: Pre-Req is Sight Translation

Translation and Interpretation in Mandarin_Certificate of Achievement-Advanced

This certificate program is designed to prepare students for a career in legal/court interpretation.  The courses in this program and designed to prepare students to pass the State of California Court Interpreter Certification Exam.  All program participants must be fluent in Mandarin and English, and have a speaking proficiency equivalent to that of an educated native speaker.  Students must complete each course with a grade of “C+” or better.

 Student Learning Outcomes – upon completion, students will be able to:

• Differentiate between translation and interpreting.

• Identify text type and audience in order to execute translation decisions.

• Demonstrate appropriate grammar terminology through a verbal discussion.

• Apply grammar and composition rules accurately.

• Apply the terminology used in translation and interpreting.

• Apply the appropriate use of sight translation in various settings.

• Interpret complex proceedings up to 145+ words per minute.

• Use consecutive interpretation in the appropriate situations in court, hospital and social services settings.

The potential careers students may enter upon completion include Administrative Hearing Interpreters; Braille Translators; Conference Interpreters; Court Interpreters; Escort Interpreters; Guide Interpreters; Legal Translators; Literary Translators; Localization Translators; Medical Interpreters; and Medical Translators. The median wage in 2018 for Interpreters and Translators in California was $53,840 annually, or $25.88 hourly. The median wage for Interpreters and Translators in Santa Clara Counties was $65,335 annually, or$31.41 hourly. The median is the point at which half of the workers earn more and half earn less. Pay may vary depending upon geographical location,experience, specialty area, and certifications held. The language can influence pay depending upon how great the demand and how many others can interpret or translate the language combination. Pay may also depend upon the required time,complexity, and technical nature of the interpreting job. For instance, Conference Interpreters often have higher earnings because their services require a high level of skill and subject matter expertise. Many Interpreters and Translators work as independent contractors. The number of words, lines, or pages they translate often determines salaries of self-employed Translators. Freelance Interpreters and those working as employees usually earn an hourly, or a daily,or per session rate.

Program Goal

This certificate program is designed to prepare students for a career in legal/court and health care interpretation. All program participants must be fluent in Mandarin and English. Students must complete each course with a grade of "C+" or better. All the courses are GE courses at De Anza College and CSU transferable. The stated goals and objectives of students for legal/court and health care interpretation are consistent with the mission of De Anza College aligned with core competences which includes communication and expression, information literacy, physical/mental wellness and personal responsibility and civic capacity for global, cultural, social and environmental justice as well as critical thinking.

The main competencies students will have achieved are:

1. Linguistic Competence:

The student’s linguistic competence includes the ability to comprehend the source language and apply this knowledge to render the message as accurately as possible in the target language.

2. Interpreting Competence:

The student’s interpreting competence comprises the ability to interpret a message from one language to the other in the applicable mode. It includes the ability to assess and comprehend the original message and render it in the target language without omissions, additions or distortions. It also includes the knowledge/awareness of the interpreter’s own role in the interpreting encounter.

3. Interpersonal skills:

• Have strong communication skills

• Be polite, respectful and tactful

• Be able to relate well to people

• Have good judgment

4. Research and Technical Competence:

The student’s research competence includes the ability to efficiently acquire the additional linguistic and specialized knowledge necessary to interpret in specialized cases. Research competence also requires experience in the use of research tools and the ability to develop suitable strategies for the efficient use of the information sources available.

5. Ethical Competence:

The student must respect,under all circumstances, confidentiality and privacy of the information contained in all documentation provided by the client for the purpose of translation, unless otherwise required by law. All information submitted shall be confidential and may not be reproduced, disclosed or divulged. The student must show respect for all parties involved in the translation assignment,including respect for self, the agency and to its clients.

Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 17 percent over the next ten years, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth reflects increasing globalization and a more diverse U.S. population, which is expected to require more interpreters and translators. In California, the majority of translation and interpreting jobs require fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or Vietnamese. Demand will likely remain strong for translators of frequently translated language in Mandarin especially in Bay Area while a large Chinese speaking community located here (37.5% of Asians at Santa Clara County, Census Report 2018).

In California, the number of Interpreters and Translators is expected to grow much faster than average growth rate for all occupations. Jobs for Interpreters and Translators are expected to increase by 20.4 percent, or 2,100 jobs between 2016 and 2026. In Santa Clara County, the number of Interpreters and Translators is expected to grow much faster than average growth rate for all occupations. Jobs for Interpreters and Translators are expected to increase by 26.3%, or 50 jobs between 2014 and 2024.

In addition, growing international trade and broadening global ties should require more interpreters and translators,especially in emerging markets in Asia. The ongoing need for military and national security interpreters and translators should result in more jobs as well.

There is no similar program being offered but only Evergreen Valley Community College (EVC) offers Translation and Interpretation Program in Spanish and in Vietnamese. Our program offers in the same framework as other programs offered at EVC. There are two colleges offer Translation and Interpretation Programs: 1.
