Catalog Description

The courses in this certificate program provide students with the hands-on skills needed to perform entry-level help desk computer support. The program courses are designed to help students prepare for industry-recognized certifications including CompTIA IT Fundamentals , Network+, Server+, and Security+. The courses emphasize development of in-demand technical skills needed in computer networking, help desk troubleshooting, server administration, and security best practices.

Program Goal

The certificate program goal is Career Technical Education (CTE) with emphasis on careers in the field of Information Technology. The program is not selective and does not have any mandatory fees.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate the ability to locate technical resources to solve problems with networking hardware and software.

2.Demonstrate proficiency with various software packages to solve common networking problems to design and implement a workable solution.

3. Build and maintain secure networks.

The associated occupations related to the program include IT Support Technician, Jr. Network Specialist, Help desk Specialist, and IT worker. The median salary of these positions is $55,780.

Program completers are anticipated to acquire competencies in the areas of supporting basic server systems, networks, desktop / laptop computers and their peripherals. Providing help desk customer support to end users, and researching simple solutions to common IT problems. Further skills attained will include those of network and system administration, and basic cyber security.

Program Requirements Narrative

There are four (4) required courses required for a total of thirteen (13) units. The suggested course sequence will be available to students in the online catalog on the Coastline website under the tab called "Program Map" next to the Program Details for this certificate.

The required core courses may be taken in any order, but it is recommended that students take these courses in the order listed below.

·        Required units – 13 units in Major area

·        Projected labor – 2.500 estimated new positions
