The Engine Performance Certificate signifies that the student has developed the knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and repair of various types of engine mechanical, ignition, fuel, emission, computer controlled systems on vehicles having drivability and engine performance malfunctions. This training will equip students to seek entry level employment at various automotive dealerships, independent repair shops, performance shops, construction companies, agriculture companies, government agencies, or other transportation and vehicle fleet repair shops. Students earning this certificate will be prepared to further pursue certification through ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) in the A8 and L1 areas as well as certification for the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) Specified Diagnostic and Repair training. The BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair training is included in the curriculum of the Auto B33 and Auto B34 courses. Students that pass those two classes and pass the final exam for Auto B34 with a "C" or better are awarded the BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair training state certificate by certified faculty not Bakersfield College. This certificate provides necessary training to prepare students to obtain their California State Smog Repair License. To Achieve the Certificate of Achievement, upon completion of the required courses with at least a "C" or "P" (pass) grade in each course, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.

This program prepares students for careers in Transportation Industry and Automotive Industry. The goal of the Automotive Department as a whole is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and technical skills to successfully enter the workforce This certificate will equip students to perform service, diagnosis, and repair of engine mechanical, ignition, fuel, emission and computer-controlled systems in the above listed industries. This certificate also provides necessary training for students to obtain their California State Smog Repair License. The latest labor market information shows that there are 1,076 annual openings in our region and there is an expected shortage of 729 workers.
