Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Chemistry for Lab Technician provides students with essential lab practices, good manufacturing practices (GMP), and good laboratory practices (GLP) that are in high demand in the biopharmaceutical or chemical industry. Students explore the groundwork in analytical laboratory testing through the use of sophisticated instrumentation and technology as they calculate for molarity, dilution, and simple buffers. Students gain the diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes in the manufacturing practice of making qualitative and quantitative analysis for research and development involving experimental, theoretical, or practical application of chemistry and related sciences. This pathway provides students with preparation for industry-desired skills towards a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career as a lab technician/lab assistant.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Based on 2018-2019 and2019-2020 enrollment data, the estimated completer projection of students to earn the award annually is 24 students.

Program Goal

Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter, its structure, and the means by which it is converted from one form to another. The chemistry program is designed to fulfill the lower division chemistry courses required for transfer to four-year institutions as well as provide students with skills and preparation necessary for employment in chemistry and other related fields. Certificates in chemistry are intended for students interested in hands-on experience and building preferred industry skills to work in the field. The associate of science degree in chemistry is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related major in a four-year university system.

San Diego City submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with a new program or program modification because 1) a supply gap exists; 2) entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage; and 3) a high number of annual job openings exist.
