Catalog Description

The Applied Electrical Technology Program prepares students for careers as industrial engineering technologists and installation/maintenance technicians. Students receive theoretical and laboratory instruction in electrical principles, electrical installations, principles of automation, sensors and controls, PLCs, industrial equipment, and control systems. All of the “ELTEC” coded classes included in the Applied Electrical Technology Associate in Science are approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards as officially recognized classes for the training of electrical trainees (ET) in the State of California.

Program Goal

The Associate in Science degree in Applied Electrical Technology is a necessary award to provide an
academic capstone for those students who complete the Electrician or the Electro-Mechanic certificates
of achievement and seek to advance their education to compete for leadership positions in the
manufacturing or construction industries. Accessing an associate degree will open opportunities for a
continuation into a four-year degree. Since 1921 Modesto Junior College has filled the social need for
accessible education for those in a diverse set of circumstances that prevent them from engaging in a
traditional academic pathway. This program is the natural extension of that mission brought to the
students engaged in the electrical technology pathways in compliance with MJC’s 2023-2028
institutional standards 5 and 6:
• “Standard 5: Increase UC/CSU transfer by 35%
• “Standard 6: Reduce equity gaps across all above measures by 40%”

This Associate in Science degree in Applied Electrical Technology is proposed in the spirit of advancing
equity for our students engaged in the electrical technology pathways, who mostly are students of color,
first-generation students, students from low-income backgrounds, and working adults.
