Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement (COA) in Cybersecurity (COA in Cybersecurity) provides students with core knowledge and practical hands-on experiences either to be employed in the fast emerging and high in-demand Cybersecurity profession or pursue a higher degree in the Cybersecurity or related fields.  This program will cover key areas of Cybersecurity including foundational security (e.g., authentication, authorization/access control, vulnerabilities, threats and attacks), secure coding, Cryptography, security analysis/design/engineering, digital forensics, security governance, and related topics to Society, Ethics, and the Profession. Students will use a variety of tools to solve real-life cases in the domain of Cybersecurity. The COA in Cybersecurity is following the ACM recommendations of Computing Competencies for Cybersecurity curricula.

Enrollment Completer Projections

There is a high demand for such a program as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data and its Occupational Outlook Handbook indicate that the job growth for Cybersecurity including Information Security Analysts is projected to be 29% from 2024 to 2034, which it is much faster than for all other occupations (3%). The projected growth will translate into total employment of 234,900 (as of 2024, total employment of 182,800) over the period. In terms of wages, in 2024, the median salary was $124,910 annually ($49,500 for all occupations total) and for hourly workers was $60.05.

The statistics also shows that the state of California will have the highest job openings in the field compared to other states. In addition, the salary and hourly rates are much higher in California as well. For instance, in May 2022, the state of California had the highest employment of 15,110 compared to other states. In California, the annual mean wage was $137,600 annually with the hourly mean wage of $66.15.

This COA in Cybersecurity will provide a streamline of students who will transfer on a higher priority admission to the pending Bachelor Degree program in Cybersecurity at Moorpark College. This is a win-win situation for the district as well as both Ventura and Moorpark Colleges as it provides our students with training and skills to be employed in one of the hottest computing field of Cybersecurity with high paying wages and serves the community. The projection is that 20-30 students will earn the certificate each year and then either be employed in the Cybersecurity field or transfer to pursue a higher degree in Cybersecurity or related fields.
