The Associate in Science in Biotechnology is the final step in Irvine Valley College's comprehensive biotechnology program. It prepares students for immediate employment in the biotechnology industry or for transfer to a four-year university. This degree builds on prior foundational coursework and emphasizes both scientific knowledge and hands-on training required for careers in research, manufacturing, and laboratory support.
Students gain experience in molecular biology, DNA sequencing and analysis, protein purification, tissue culture, and bioinformatics. Training is conducted using industry-standard equipment, including micropipettes, spectrophotometers, PCR machines, electrophoresis systems, and DNA sequencing platforms. The program also emphasizes regulatory and quality assurance practices, such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and proper documentation techniques that align with industry and FDA expectations.
write a program goal Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions such as laboratory technician, research associate, or quality control analyst in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to apply core biological and chemical principles to biotechnological processes, perform and analyze standard laboratory techniques including DNA sequencing, follow regulatory and safety protocols, interpret experimental data, and maintain clear and accurate laboratory records.
The projected number of students to complete the program annually is eight. As the program is established annual completers is anticipated to be 15+ students.
