Catalog Description
The Caterpillar Engine Technician certificate program at San Joaquin Delta College centers on teaching students the major components, tear down, rebuilding and troubleshooting of Caterpillar diesel engines. The coursework provides the students with skills for entry level positions as a Caterpillar engine technician. Curriculum content is based on industry standards and skills that can be applied to any diesel engine. Students can attain skills using state of the art equipment and trainers while working on real Caterpillar diesel engines. Through a selected progression of mechanical, electrical and troubleshooting courses, the student will be able to function as a Caterpillar diesel engine technician/mechanic. The objective of this certificate is to offer students opportunities to gain skills and knowledge in Caterpillar engine technology. San Joaquin Delta College in partnership with local industry has developed an academic program that prepares the students for the certificate in the Caterpillar Engine Technician apprenticeship program. This aligns their skills with current industry standards and certifications. Industry recognized that certifications provide measurable benefits to Caterpillar Dealer Engine Technician students and their employers and requested a certificate program be developed. This certificate can be stacked upon by other certificates and degrees such as the Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Associates Degree program. All of the apprentices will complete the certificate program and the majority will continue on to finish the two year Associates degree. Some of the students will complete the Certificate and branch off into a program that is a Caterpillar Dealer specific Electric Power Generation program offered through the Dealer network. Program Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the fuel setting procedure on a 3406B new scroll fuel system. 2. Upon successful completion of the Caterpillar Engine Technician Certificate Apprenticeship program, 90% of the apprentices will score 70 or higher on the diesel engine and electrical sections of the AED test administered by Caterpillar and/or Association of Equipment Dealers.
