Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Advanced Arc Welding will emphasize advance welding skills in the SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) and FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding) processes. Course work includes a comprehensive study with an emphasis on application of fundamental welding techniques and safe industry practices. Potential careers that the program prepares students for include, but are not limited to, Pipe Fitters and Steamfitters, Sheet Metal Workers, as well as Structural Iron and Steel Workers There are material fees for the courses associated with the program totaling $80.00. The student will also be required to provide all PPE safety gear (personal protective gear) required to safely perform SMAW welds in the lab.

Program Goal

1. Demonstrate advanced level skills to produce quality welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions using various arc welding processes.

The basic occupational competencies students will acquire will be: acquire the necessary skills to produce quality FCAW (Flux Corel Arc Welding) and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions; acquire a basic understanding of metallurgy as it relates to welding; be able to interpret the text, figures and tables found in AWS (American Welding Society) D1.1 Structural Welding Code book; be prepared for an entry level welding positions as a sheet metal worker, ironworker or pipefitter.

Due to Guided Pathway efforts, Long Beach City College is sending low unit Certificates of Accomplishment (12-17.5 units) to the Chancellor’s Office for approval. Once approved, these already-existing programs will become Certificates of Achievement and will allow the College to better serve students and assist in streamlining and increasing completions.
