The San Diego Miramar College Regional Fire Academy (MCRFA) Fire Fighter 1 Academy COA covers skills and knowledge needed for the entry level firefighter with a focus on the State Fire Training
Requirements for Firefighter 1 Certification. Fire Fighter 1 is the first certification in the California Fire Fighter professional certification series.
- To provide the skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level fire fighter to perform structural suppression activities.
- To provide the awareness skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level fire fighter to recognize and identify hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction (WMD), isolate hazards and deny entry, and initiate required notification.
- To provide the skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level fire fighter to perform wildland fire suppression activities.
- To provide the CA State Fire Marshal / State Fire Training Certification Exam for Fire Fighter 1.

San Diego Miramar College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program because 1) the occupations’ entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage; 2) a supply gap exists; and 3) a low number of programs currently exist.
