Program Details
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
New Program
Geographic Information Systems (220610)
08/12/24
The Certificate of Achievement in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is to both provide students with the skills they need to obtain entry-level technician positions in GIS and to provide the technical skills of students in other career technical education programs (e.g., Environmental Science, Field Biology, Plant Science, others) where GIS proficiency would improve their employment opportunities. Additionally, those earning the certificate can continue their education towards an AAT in Geography, providing a transfer pathway to higher education programs.
We anticipate a few students initially (2-5) but increasing to 8-12 as we grow and collaborate with other CTE programs (e.g. Environmental Science).
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The goal of a Certificate of Achievement in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is to both provide students with the skills they need to obtain entry-level technician positions in GIS and to provide the technical skills of students in other career technical education programs (e.g., Environmental Science, Field Biology, Plant Science, others) where GIS proficiency would improve their employment opportunities. Additionally, those earning the certificate can continue their education towards an AAT in Geography, providing a transfer pathway to higher education including California State University programs in Geography. To summarize, the objectives of this program are:
• To provide training for students looking for entry-level technician positions in GIS.
• To create a pathway for environmental science, biology, ecology, or other related disciplines the option to gain training in GIS.
• To create a pathway for students to continue their education in Geography and transfer to 4-year degree programs.
Program Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify, evaluate, and interpret sources of geographic information from maps, geographic information systems data, and remotely-sensed data.
2. Perform data collection, display, and analysis of geographic information using geographic information systems and associated geospatial technologies.
3. Solve geographic problems using geographic information systems and related geospatial applications.
