Catalog Description

The social media program teaches online and visual communication, including producing images, videos, articles, blog posts and podcasts. Skills learned will be further enhanced being creating content for Pierce College Media Arts Department publications, the Roundup, the Bull, KPC Radio.com and related social media accounts.

Upon completion of this program, certificate holders should be able to apply the skill sets in a variety of social media careers. These skills are also applicable in journalism fields as well as communication, marketing, public relations, film, television and electronic media. Specific careers related to this certificate would include: social media specialist, social media manager, social media strategist, brand ambassador, community manager, brand manager, digital media producer, social media director, content strategist, content manager, content producer, digital marketer, digital content producer, social media editor, social media lead, social media consultant and social media assistant

Program Goal

The goal of the CTE Social Media Certificate is meant to prepare students to obtain freelance and permanent employment in social media or to use social media skills in other areas of employment.

 Notes:

 •Students will need a smartphone or tablet to complete this program.

•Some courses (such as photography) may have lab fees.

 

Upon successful completion of this program, students will:

 •Develop receptive and ex Develop critical thinking skills to separate fact from opinion in various major social media platforms.

 •Students will develop a personal visual and writing style which will help them to create a portfolio and related materials for job preparation.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Social Media Certificate of Achievement consists of 23 units. This includes 20 units of major-required courses and one elective. The certificate is interdisciplinary, with courses from the disciplines of journalism, communication, marketing, photography and media arts.

The proposed sequence table below shows that this Certificate of Achievement can be accomplished in two semesters. All courses are offered online.
