Item 1.            Program Goals and Objectives

 

The Certificate of Achievement in Newswriting and Reporting was created due to student need. Many students already come into the journalism program with BAs and other professional experience. This certificate was developed to help students learn the basics of newswriting and reporting in a short amount of time in order to enter the workforce or better support the skills they need for their existing career.

 

Program Outcomes

·        Assemble a portfolio of appropriate photographs,writings, journals or digital media that reflects the skills and understanding of techniques of journalism.

·        Write news, features, and opinion pieces in newspaper style.

·        Apply media law, fact-checking and ethics to the journalistic process.

The data shows a robust growth in the number of students at Laney College who are in majors that require rigorous training in lower-division computer science courses.

c)     There are no related programs offered by the college. Laney does offer an AA and AA-T in Journalism.

Laney is the only college in the district that offers journalism curriculum.  Outside of our district, no other college in our service area offers a CA in Newswriting and Reporting. CCSF has 2 CAs in Online Research and Editorial Management; DeAnza CA in Public Relations.
