Catalog Description

The Dance Instructor Certificate prepares dancers to teach in private studios, recreational facilities, or community dance programs. Students study theory and technique courses in dance choreography, performance, and instruction. They gain a well-rounded foundation in dance that encompasses a variety of dance genres and teaching methodologies. Most candidates for this certificate already have experience in a specific dance genre and need to gain a broader understanding and experience in the overall field of dance education.

AY 23-24    4

AY 24-25    4

AY 25-26    4

Completer projections are based on prior years.

Due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, internships were put on hold and students were unable to complete the certificate. For academic years, 2017-2020, data in the labor Market analysis (attached) shows two completers. However, enrollments and completions are projected to grow over the next

several years, with a projected increase to two-five annual completers. This will be a result of return to normal instruction and the development of connections with new dance studios in the area, Head Start dance programs, local YMCAs and community centers.

Southwestern supports program modification. We have concerns related to wages identified, but also understand that this industry is often part of the gig economy.

Wages are low and it seems like it is not specialized enough to the LMI report. Looks more like a transfer curriculum.

MiraCosta College also endorses, and, recognizes Susan's comments as very relevant when reviewing programs like this one. With that said MiraCosta would not request approval for a new like program. We always hope modifications will result in better performance in terms of students earning living wages.

MiraCosta college submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with caution when developing a program because wages are below the living wage, but supports a program modification because 1) a supply gap exists and 2) a high number of annual job openings exist.

Palomar supports program modification. This is a difficult certificate to judge, because of the low wages, though many dance teachers are self-employed and may work for other employers as well, combining incomes.
