The Administration of Justice Certificate of Achievement in Parole is designed to prepare students to meet the needs of entry-level positions in the fields of corrections and parole. The curriculum prepares students with a foundation in administration of justice/law enforcement and provides them with the knowledge to enter various career areas. The skills developed in classes enhance students' knowledge in the area of the criminal justice parole system.

The purpose of the Certificate of Achievement in Parole is to provide the student with selected basic core courses to meet the needs of entry-level positions or re-skilling of current public safety professionals in preparation for employment/promotion in the Parole field. 

Upon completion of the course curriculum the student will have a general and basic understanding of the administration of justice system and all of its associated issues, including the ability to Apply legal definitions, concepts, and principles to law enforcement, courts, or correctional settings.

  1. Communicate information in a clear and organized manner.
  2. Demonstrate the basic steps of interviewing and interrogation and write a satisfactory report of an interview or interrogation
  3. Analyze ethical dilemmas encountered in the law enforcement and/or correctional fields and decide on the correct ethical choice.
  4. Adapt to the diverse and multicultural nature of American society in the criminal justice system.
  5. Apply constitutional, statutory, procedural, and case law to real-life criminal justice situations.
  6. Contrast the court procedures that occur from arrest through appeal.
  7. Discuss the legal aspects of courtroom criminal evidence, especially as they apply in California courts.
  8. Discuss the various types of evidence presented in court.
  9. Articulate knowledge and skills necessary for entry level positions within various parts of the profession, including understanding contemporary issues in the field.

Specific Objectives of the Degree/Certificate

The Administration of Justice program is intended to meet the mission of Rio Hondo College and the California Community College Chancellor’s Office by:

  1. Serving the general community in making the numerous courses related to the needs of careers within the Administration of Justice.
  2. Meeting the needs of a growing career field in Public Safety as noted by the CCCCO’s Public Safety Advisory Committee for new skill attainment and re-skilling professionals in current Public Safety careers.
  3. Providing students with technical preparation for employment in the Administration of Justice field.
  4. Offering students with an interest in pursuing a career within Administration of Justice the knowledge to work in this diverse and growing field.
  5. Addressing California’s economic growth by focusing on the current needs of regional employers with an emphasis on Administration of Justice.

The goal of this program is to meet the needs of the students who are interested in pursuing careers in or advancing careers in the myriad of fields within Administration of Justice, such as Police Officers, Records Clerks, Dispatchers, Community Service Officers, Custody Assistants, Cadets, Parking Control Officers, Code Enforcement Officers, Probation Officers, Security Officers, Crime Scene Investigators, Arson and Fraud Investigators, Analysts, Private Investigators, Interns and a host of opportunities within State and Federal government. Possession of such a certificate will demonstrate to employing agencies and companies an orientation to the profession and a basic level of knowledge that is often times lacking from entry level applicants.
