Catalog Description

The Court Reporting Scopist Certificate of Achievement prepares students for employment supporting Certified Shorthand Reporters by editing and producing accurate, formatted transcripts for court, depositions, hearings, arbitrations, and related proceedings. Students learn to work within computer-aided transcription (CAT) environments to convert reporter output into polished, verbatim text; research and resolve untranslated and mistranslated entries; apply the Minimum Transcript Format Standards; and manage reporter dictionaries and job files. Emphasis is placed on English usage and punctuation for legal records, legal and medical terminology, audio-to-text verification, confidentiality and ethics, production workflows, and on-time delivery. Graduates are prepared for freelance or agency roles that are commonly remote and deadline driven.

Program Goal

The Court Reporting program prepares students for court, deposition, Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), and broadcast roles by building real-time speed and accuracy, Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) proficiency, professional ethics, and licensure readiness through structured labs, timed takes, mock exams, and work-based learning. It supports transfer with GE‑aligned coursework and clear advising maps, while strengthening grammar, legal vocabulary, keyboarding fluency, and secure digital workflows. Students practice impartiality, confidentiality, and accessibility through service or simulations, develop a portfolio and a growth plan, and learn basics of contracting and billing. Equity supports include flexible schedules, hybrid theory, labs, equipment lending, and tutoring, with annual assessment using performance data, employer feedback, portfolios, and capstone results.
